Hi all,
Very interesting information here and nice work on the message boards.
I've had a fascination with my family history for many years now. One of my relatives was William Southerland (Sutherland) Hamilton who was married to Eliza Steward and lived in Lousiana and was a planter and slave owner.
My great grandfather was Charles S. (Stewart?) Hamilton, who I believe was his grandson.
My great grandmother was black, Rose Cummings, who had 6 children with Mr. Hamilton (who they called "papa Charlie"). Charles was also married to a white woman and had children with her as well.
Would like to know more about the Stewarts as well.
This is a really interesting part of American history. |

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your family story. However, as this forum is intended only for Stewarts who are descended from the Stewarts of Balquhidder then I'm afraid your posting appears to be off-topic. If at some time in the future you determine that your Stewarts originated in southern Perthshire, Scotland then please feel free to post again with that information. Thanks. _________________ Ryk Brown

| Eliza Stewart was my great-great-great grandmother. According to your gen. charts, she was one of the Stewarts of Balquhidder. She was the daughter of Duncan Stewart, |

My apologies. We have a very large database. I was unable to find Eliza in it because the only identifying information you provided was her husband's name: William Sutherland Hamilton. We have him listed as "W.S. Hambelton". That's why I missed the connection the first time.
Eliza is indeed one of "ours". She was daughter of Duncan Stewart, Lt. Gov. of Mississippi, son of William Stewart, Younger of Ledcreich, son of Alexander Stewart, 4th of Ledcreich -- of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. More information on that branch is available here:

Welcome to the clan! If you have any questions about your Stewart connection, please ask. Meanwhile I will upgrade you to full member status so you can post in all our forums and have access to our private members-only forum. And I will move this discussion to the Stewarts of Glenbuckie forum now that we know your connection.

Inez Reed posted the following message elsewhere on the forum, but it was intended as a reply to this post. -- Ryk

OT - You had a person inquiring about African American Stewarts...FWIW The 1851 NB census lists numerous black or coloured Stuart or Stewart families. These Stuarts evidently arrived in the Maritimes during or immediately after the War of 1812 from plantations in the Chesapeake Bay/Delmarva Peninsula. These individuals are not found in later census records to the best of my knowledge. They may have removed to Louisiana as a point of speculation.
