Monica
Welcome Welcome to the Forum. I will have a look through our data and see what I can dig up on your family. I'll get back to you shortly.

Hi Monica

Your ancestor Peter Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, appears on the local census of the Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, taken in 1814. The family lived at Wood Lane, No 14 (sic #14 Kirk Lane - Ryk) and Peter was the fourth child, aged 9 in 1814 so born about 1804/5. You can find the details at
http://www.chuckspeed.com/balquhidder/history/Blair_Drummond_Moss_Census_1814.htm
The wife's name is recorded as Christian McLean, but the baptismal records of her children show that her name was Christian McLeran or McLaren. Her husband Duncan Stewart was baptized in Edinample in Balquhidder parish on 22 Dec 1776, son of Donald Stewart and Margaret McGregor alias Murray.

Welcome to the group.

Found 'em.

Monica, your family of origin is presented here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rykbrown/other_stewarts_of_the_south.htm#Donald%20STEWART%20in%20Edinample

It is the family of Donald Stewart in Edinample. His 7th son was Duncan Stewart who resided at Kirkline, Flanders Moss as Belinda referenced above. Duncan's son Peter was actually born at Dalveich in Balquhidder parish, but his parents moved to Kincardine when Peter was just a few months old. So he was "raised" in Kincardine, but not actually born there.

Your family are actually descended from the Stewarts of Drumcharry, a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Atholl. Technically not related to our Balquhidder Stewarts, but still residing in the Balquhidder area.

So there's an additional two generations to your family tree, plus you now know your clan of origin too! That's quite exciting!

Unfortunately we have not identified a birth for Donald Stewart in Edinample. He was likely born about 1730 outside of the Balquhidder area, possibly in Methven or Atholl. And his father's name was probably John, but we cannot be certain about any of those matters.

Meanwhile, I will move this thread to the "Other Stewarts" section and upgrade you, Monica, to full membership here so you can post in all forum sections.

PS - Our fellow researcher Kaye Lally is also descended from this family. Her contact information can be found at the link above. Kaye's branch of your family moved to New Zealand.

Hello Monica,

I notice your Moss Laird ancestors occupied the No 14 Plott, in Wood Lane, on the Blair Drummond Moss.

My ancestors occupied the No 9 Plott, in Wood Lane, on the same Moss.

Both these Plotts were situated adjacent to each other. Everyone on the Moss seems to have got on well with one another, so they must have been friendly neighbours.

John, Descendant of John Stewart of Balquhidder-Glenbuckie Stewarts.

Ryk did an edit:

Both addresses are wrong. The correct address is Wood Lane, No 16, where lived Duncan Stewart and his wife Christian McLean (sic) and their 7 children, including Peter. The family living at 14 Kirk Lane was that of Duncan Stewart and Ann McGregor and they didn't have a son named Peter.

Embarassed Oops. Belinda is correct. Embarassed

Thanks for catching that Belinda. I have corrected the web page accordingly.

Monica, I must thank you immensely for this information. Identifying your one branch has helped lead to identifying three other branches of your family. The link above will show you those additional families.
