Hi all,

Here is a curious progression of writs.

1. Disposition by Sir Colin Campbell of Aberuchill to John Stewart, third lawful son to Robert Stewart in Culgartmore, his heirs and assignees of the 5 merk land of Calziemore, comprehending the lands of Carrick, Corill, Claggan, Calziemore, Rowardennan and pertinents with the privilege of the ferry, ferryboat and office of ferrying at Rowardennan on Loch Lomond, with the island called Islandnadergan, to be held of Sir Colin Campbell for the payment of the yearly feu duty of 70 merks scots and £60 for the entry of each heir. 2. Bond by John Stewart of Calziemore to Sir Colin Campbell of Aberuchill for £377 bearing annuity. Dated 13 September, 1701.

3. Extract bond by John Stewart of Calziemore as principal and Robert Stewart, his eldest son, as cautioner, to Duncan Buchanan in Sallachie for 800 merks with annualrent and penalty. Dated 15 Dec 1701.

4. Discharge and assignation by John Stewart of Calziemore as principal and Robert Stewart, his eldest son, as cautioner, to John Stewart, lawful son to the deceased James Stewart in Auchnahard for 400 merks scots. Dated 11 December, 1708.

5. Instrument of sasine in favour of Robert Stewart as heir to his father John Stewart, of the 5 merk land of Calziemore following on precept. Dated 21 Oct 1710.

6. Disposition by Robert Stewart of Calziemore in favour of Colin Buchanan, brother german to William Buchanan of Auchmar of the 5 merk land of Calziemore, containing procuratory of resignation and precept of sasine. Dated 2 December, 1717.

7. Disposition by Mr John McAlpine, minister at New Tarbet, with consent of Mary Robison, his spouse, to James Stewart of Gartnafoure, his heirs and assignees, of the 5 merk land of Calziemore. Containing procuratory of resignation and precept of sasine. Dated 26 February, 1742.

8. Instrument of sasine in favour of James Stewart of Gartnafoure, his heirs and assignees, of the 5 merk land of Calziemore following on precept. Dated 26 May, 1742.

9. Extract disposition by James Stewart of Gartnafoure to Gilbert McAlpine, drover in Achallader in liferent, and John McAlpine, his eldest lawful son, his heirs and assignees in fee, providing that it shall be lawful to Gilbert McAlpine at any time in his life to sell and dispose of the said lands without consent of John McAlpine, his son, of the 5 merk land of Calziemore. Containing procuratory of resignation and precept of sasine. Dated 28 January, 1747.

These last three are of particular interest to me, since they involve James Stewart of Gartnafuaran. It is with James that the ties of this family to Gartnafuaran were ended:

Quote:

I find the fact that James Stewart of G. would be interested in these lands in particular very interesting especially when the previous proprietors are taken into consideration.

Yes, it suggests some kind of relationship between the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran and the Stewarts of Calziemore. Any ideas as to what the nature of that relationship might have been?

Gordon, do you know where any of these places are? I was wondering if Calziemore might be the same place as Callziemuck/Kalimuck in Port of Menteith parish. It's close to Rednock. Also wonder if Calgartmore is Gartmore, though I think I've seen a Calliegartmor name in local parish registers (possibly Aberfoyle or Port) as something different.

Hi Belinda,

Although I am not familiar with them I would be surprised if these lands were not part of Calziemuk and Gartmore.

Regarding the lands of Calziemore, the following is of use as it shows them to lie in the parish of Inchcalleach, an Isle on Loch Lomond, and in 1665 John Stewart, third son of Robert, also obtained the rights to the ferry at Rowardennan on Loch Lomondside.

Feu contract by James Stirling of Belwill, with consent of William Stirling of Coldach, his father, in favour of Andrew McAlpine in Orchard within Argyle of the 3 merk land of Lurg and one merk land of Ross, with half of the 5 merk land of Calziemore lying in the parish of Inchcailloch, barony of Haldane and sheriffdom of Perth for payment of £10 scots feu duty. Dated 12 March, 1642.

Also,

Disposition by Colin Buchanan, with consent of Robert Stewart of Calziemore, to Mr John McAlpine, eldest lawful son of Donald McAlpine of Ross, of the 5 merk land of Calziemore. Containing procuratory of resignation and precept of sasine. Dated 25 January, 1726.

The above Mr John MacAlpine was the Minister at New Tarbet who disponed the same 5 merk lands of Calziemuk to James Stewart of Gartnaferan in 1742.

Robert Stewart, therefore, did not renounce or dispone all his rights to these lands to Colin Buchannan in 1717.

Sorry, my head is not on my shoulders, the lands of Calziemore are defined in the original charter of 1665 as being;

"5 merk land of Calziemore, comprehending the lands of Carrick, Corill, Claggan, Calziemore, Rowardennan and pertinents with the privilege of the ferry, ferryboat and office of ferrying at Rowardennan on Loch Lomond, with the island called Islandnadergan,"

All of these are on the east shore of Loch Lomond.

Hmm, Calziemore seems a good distance from Gartnafuaran. I wonder what drew James Stewart that far west of his ancestral home? And this was about the time that he disposed of Gartnafuaran, I think.

I think a broader look at the inter-relationships may be beneficial;

John Graham of Duchray was father of,

1. Jean, married to Duncan Stewart of Glenbuckie and had issue.
2. Anna, married to John Buchannan of Auchmar, by contract dated 10 July, 1666.

John Buchannan and Anna Buchannan had a second son, Colin Buchannan, who as per the above;

"6. Disposition by Robert Stewart of Calziemore in favour of Colin Buchanan, brother german to William Buchanan of Auchmar of the 5 merk land of Calziemore, containing procuratory of resignation and precept of sasine. Dated 2 December, 1717."

What is also curious is that Duncan Graham, younger son of John Graham of Duchray, had an eldest son Alexander Graham who married to Jean, daughter of John Stewart, 9th of Glenbuckie, by contract dated 10 January, 1740.

I would suggest that the Calziemore Stewarts were very close kin to either the Gartnaferan or Glenbuckie Stewarts but more probably the former.

Upon further inspection on my notes, I notice that a daughter of John Buchanan, 5th of Auchmar, married to Robert Stewart of Calziemore, and another to an Andrew Stewart in Drymen who appears in numerous documents including many receipts by himself for the "watchmoney" to Gregor MacGregor of Glengyle.

John Buchanan, 5th of Auchmar, succeeded his father and m. at Buchanan on 15 July, 1666, to Anna, daughter of John Graham, of Duchray, (c/d 10 July, 1666). He was father of,

1. William Buchanan, 6th of Auchmar, (see below).

2. Colin Buchanan who, with his brother William Buchanan of Auchmar, granted a Bond of Relief to John Gibson, Writer in Edinburgh, on 15 May, 1727. He, m. to Anna, daughter of James Hamilton, of Aikenhead, and had issue.

3. Patrick Buchanan, c. at Buchanan on 8 June, 1683.

4. Margaret Buchanan, c. at Buchanan on 13 June, 1667, and m. at Buchanan on 16 April, 1686, to Robert Graham, of Glenny.

5. Jean Buchanan, c. at Buchanan on 5 March, 1678.

6. Marjory Buchanan, c. at Buchanan on 18 December, 1680.

7. Catherine Buchanan, m. firstly to George Buchanan, of the Auchlessie family : and secondly to Andrew Stewart, of Townhead of Drymen.

8. A daughter, m. to Robert Stewart, of Calliemore.

9. Elizabeth Buchanan, m. at Buchanan on 21 August, 1711, to George McFarlane, in Drymen.

Wow, this is fascinating. So we could be looking at a potentially new cadet branch of Gartnafuaran previously unknown! Very exciting.

I note too that Andrew was a popular Gartnafuaran forename.

And it's not all that hard to believe that an entire branch could be missing from Stewarts of the South. Chuck's branch of Glenbuckie, from Ledcreich, are not mentioned in SOS at all as they emmigrated in the very early 18th century and were presumably completely unknown to Capt. James.

"Buchanan of Auchmar" seemed somehow familiar in connection with the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran. Then I remembered that there is a Gartnafuaran and Blairgarry connection with the Buchanans of Auchmar. In the 1723 Buchanan genealogy by William Buchanan of Auchmar, it says:

Quote:
George Buchanan 3rd in Auchmar, married in his brother’s lifetime Janet Stewart, daughter to Andrew Stewart, who had a beneficial tack [esteemed in these days, equivalent to heritage] of the lands of Blairgarie, and some other lands, from the Earl of Murray, in Strathgartney, and in the Parish of Callander; he was also the Earl’s Baillie in these parts. That family is now represented by Alexander Stewart of Gartnafuaroe in Balquhidder parish; . . . .

Alexander, of course, was the father of the abovementioned James Stewart of Gartnafuaran.

Also, Andrew was a popular Gartnafuaran forename, and especially a popular Blairgarry forename.

That would certainly expand on my account on the Auchmar family to date. What a very interesting tangled web this is turning out to be.

William Buchanan, 1st of Auchmar, was a child by his father's second marriage who obtained these lands and m. to Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Hamilton, of Eglismachan, (c/d 20 February, 1560). He d. prior to November of 1588 and had issue,

1. Patrick Buchanan, 2nd of Auchmar, succeeded his father and m. to Helen, daughter of Thomas Buchanan, 2nd of Ibert. He dsp in July of 1603.
2. George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar, (see below).
3. William Buchanan,
4. Johanna Buchanan, m. to John MacGregor, son and heir of Gregor MacEan MacGregor, of Brackley, and is styled as his future spouse in a charter in their favour for the lands of Brackley on 26 December, 1574.1
5. Margaret Buchanan, m. to Cunningham of Blairquosh.
6. A daughter, m. James Colquhoun.

George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar, succeeded his brother on his death in July of 1603 and m. to Janet Stewart. He was father of,

1. Patrick Buchanan, 4th of Auchmar, (see below).
2. John Buchanan,
3. Maurice Buchanan,
4. William Buchanan,
5. Robert Buchanan,
6. George Buchanan,
7. Janet Buchanan, m. to Robert Colquhoun, of Camstradden, (c/d 20 January, 1631,) and had issue.
8. A daughter, m. to Captain Pettigrew.
