Hi there,
I see that you have a Charles Martin (b. 1879) listed as the son of Henry Martin and Margaret Dunn, and that this family was listed in the 1881 census but not in the 1901 census.
In the 1901 census my family in Huron Co, Morris Twp, Ontario, Canada, has a Charles Martin (b. 26 May 1879 and misspelled as "Charles Martus") listed as a domestic. I know this is a really long shot-- Charles Martin is not exactly an uncommon name-- but I was wondering if you have your Charles' exact date of birth or any more information about Henry Martin's siblings.
I ask because the head of the family, John Elston, was married to a Mary Martin (who died before 1901), and I have been unable to find any information on her parentage. I was wondering if she might have been a relative of Charles, maybe an aunt, and that is why he went to live with her family.
I've just started my research so please forgive me if I've made any rookie mistakes!

Oma
Sorry for the delay in replying. Charles Martin was born 4 JAN 1879 in Fergus, Wellington County, Ontario. That would appear to not match your Charles Martus. Best of luck on your search.

I realize that this is an old post but thought I would put in what info I have.
Charles Marcus Martin alias Charles Marcus Curtis was my great uncle.
I'll try to explain this name glitch. According to my grandmother, Bertha Elmira Martin/Curtis, Henry Martin --born John Franklin Curtis in Concord, Hew Hampshire was orphaned early in life --not sure exactly when---and he was taken on with a family named Martin who left NH and relocated to Fergus, Ontario. He adopted the name of Henry Martin. He married Margaret Allen Dunn and later moved to East Aurora, Erie, NY where he re-adopted his real name since he was a US citizen. Their children, Bertha Elmira, Charles Marcus, and Margaret Elizabeth also adopted the Curtis name.
At some point another child entered the picture William Henry Spires Curtis.
I saw on Ryk's World connect Margaret A. Dunn page tne following "Note: Margaret and Henry are not found in the 1901 Canadian census."
Now you know why. Henry was killed by lightning about 1888 while watching a storm from his back door in East Aurora, NY. My grandmother, Bertha, witnessed this.
If you would care to explore this further I would be happy to share any info I may have.
Hopefully, Ryk you will see this post because i want to thank you for all the research you have done. I have been looking for Margaret Dunn's background for years and this is the first info I have found on her beyond the Henry Martin connection. |
