Your site has been an absolute delight to discover and i am happy to add my findings to your work. You have listed the above gent who is my Great Grand Father.

Malcolm was born in Comrie, ref:- 341-37
He was married to Maggie L. Stewart who was a farmers daughter.
Maggies parents were Peter Stewart & Isabella Stewart - Dow
They had three children; Jessie 1882; Peter; 1885; Maggie 1888
Maggie L. Stewart died of "trauma & exhaustion following child birth" on 14/06/1888 aged 31yrs at St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire.

My Uncle traced the 1891 census and found Malcolm had moved to Edinburgh some time between the death of his wife in 1888 and Census. The 1891 Census shows he lived at 26 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh and worked as a spirit sales assistant. He met and married Johanna (beleved to be his live in house keeper) and they lived at 26 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh. They had 5 children

The marriage register entries of son Peter Stewart McNaughton and James Brown McNaughton both list Malcolm's occupation as retired insurance agent. Possibly suplimenting his income by working several jobs.

By the time of his son, Malcolm junior's death, as a result of a gas attack on the western front in 1918, Malcolm and Johanna had moved to Calvine where he worked as a shepherd.

I have managed to trace Malcolms ancestors to Killin a "Donald McNaughtan" born about 1760 and married to a "Margaret" but I am unable to trace it any further back. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,
I cannot help with yer kin going further back than what you already have.
I do have a list of all McNaughtons born and wed in Perthshire from the OPR. plus all death records from the Statutory returns.
Also have most census returns from Breadalbane 1841-1901.
On the 1881 census I think this is your family.

Dwelling: Innervar
Census Place: Fortingall, Perth, Scotland
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John MC NAUGHTON W 60 M Fortingall, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Teacher

Not 100% sure on the above John, but I thik he married Janet Ferguson 1859. If that is the case I have a copy of the record..

Dwelling: Roromore
Census Place: Weem, Perth, Scotland
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John CAMERON M 65 M Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Farmer Of 81 Acres Arable
Elizabeth CAMERON M 61 F Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Occ: Farmers Wife
Peter CAMERON U 21 M Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Farmers Son
Hugh CAMERON U 17 M Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Farmers Son
Chirsty CAMERON U 29 F Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Farmers Daur
Jessie CAMERON U 24 F Weem, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Farmers Daur
Malcom MC NAUGHTON U 26 M Comrie, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Servant
Occ: Shepherd
Malcom MC MARTIN U 18 M Kenmore, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Servant
Occ: Farm Serv
John ROBERTSON U 26 M Dalkeith
Rel: Servant
Occ: Cattleman

I would take the above as 99%.
On his mariage record, one year later he is at Roro.

However this one is 100%

Dwelling: 1 Tomintanda
Census Place: Blair Athole, Perth, Scotland

Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Duncan STEWART U 33 M Blair Athole, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Farmer Of 30 Ac Of Which 25 Ara
Margaret STEWART U 24 F Blair Athole, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Sis
Occ: Farmers Sis
Peter STEWART U 22 M Blair Athole, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Bro
Occ: Joiner
Margaret MC GREGOR U 14 F Bowling, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Farm Serv

Hope this is of some help.
More than happy to share all info I have.
On the death records, you should be able to find your Campbell, Stewart, Dow, and Ferguson kin, if they were married to a McNaughton. whatever spelling.
Hope this is of some help
Davie

Malcolm

Sorry for the delay in replying to your original post. And many thanks to Davie for assisting.

I am very, very interested in following up on your family. Not only your McNaughtons but also your Stewarts. There were not very many Stewart families in St. Fillans or nearby and I am descended from one of them. The fact that you and I both descend from McNaughton-Stewart families in Comrie certainly has my attention. I will look into this later this evening and get back to you asap.

Sincerely

Ryk

Malcolm

Okay, I've had a chance to look a little further into your family. I am in agreement with Davie on the information that he dug up for the 1881 census.

As noted on my McNaughton page, I have your ancestor Malcolm coming from the following family:

Quote:
Malcolm MCNAUGHTAN m 17 JUL 1809 in Weem to Margaret CAMPBELL
    1. Catharine MCNAUGHTAN, bap 16 SEP 1810 in Fortingall
    2. Girsel MCNAUGHTAN, bap 15 MAY 1812 in Fortingall
    3. Duncan MCNAUGHTAN, bap 31 DEC 1813 in Fortingall
    4. Donald MCNAUGHTAN, bap 06 JAN 1816 in Fortingall
    5. John MCNAUGHTON b 1821 in Fortingall (son of Malcolm McNaughton and Margaret Campbell), school teacher, m 31 MAY 1859 in Lurg, Monzievaird and Strowan to Janet FERGUSON, b 1823 in Monzievaird, dtr of Donald Ferguson and Janet McDougal), res 1861 Dundas St. Comrie village. They had:
      1. Malcolm MCNAUGHTON, b 1860 in Comrie, bap 07 AUG 1859 in Comrie.
      2. Janet Ann MCNAUGHTON, bap 30 JUN 1861 in Comrie
      3. Margaret Campbell MCNAUGHTON, bap 22 APR 1863 in Comrie
      4. Christian MCNAUGHTON, bap 03 DEC 1865 in Comrie

Onomastics would suggest that the senior Malcolm McNaughtan was likely the son of a Duncan. I have suggested the following family as an excellent candidate, but with insufficient evidence to come to a conclusion:
Quote:
Duncan MCNAUGHTANE and Katherine MCLALLAN (no marriage found)
    1. Janet MCNAUGHTAN, bap 25 APR 1773 in Fortingall (mother's surname not given)
    2. Malcolm MCNAUGHTANE, bap 14 OCT 1778 in Fortingall -- possibly the Malcolm who m Margaret Campbell, above
    3. Donald MCNAUGHTANE, bap 06 NOV 1779 in Fortingall (twin)
    4. Christian MCNAUGHTANE, bap 06 NOV 1779 in Fortingall (twin)
    5. Catharine MCNAUGHTAN, bap 01 JUL 1781 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)
    6. Mary MCNAUGHTAN, bap. 08 FEB 1784 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)
    7. Donald MCNAUGHTAN, bap 04 DEC 1785 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)
    8. Duncan MCNAUGHTAN, bap 16 AUG 1789 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)
    9. John MCNAUGHTAN, bap 08 MAY 1791 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)
    10. Finlay MCNAUGHTAN, bap 25 OCT 1795 in Fortingall (mother: Catharine McLellan)

However, you indicate that you have traced your line back to a Donald McNaughton. I am curious about this. Could you elaborate more on your findings?

I have also identified the following family as the birth family for Maggie Stewart (in agreement with Davie's findings):
Quote:
Duncan STEWART, b. ca. 1765, m Jean DOW (no marriage record found). They had:
    1. Patrick/Peter STEWART b 1796-98 in Blair Atholl, bap 16 MAR 1796 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. m 23 FEB 1845 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland to Isabella DOW b 1816 in Blair Atholl. In 1861 Peter and Isabella and their children were residing in Tom Untionda, Blair Atholl. In 1871 Peter and Isabella were residing at Tominlanda, Blair Atholl with their children. In 1881 their children Duncan, Margaret, and Peter were residing at Tominatanda, Blair Atholl. In all census records Peter Stewart is shown as a farmer of various small acreage, implying that he was a small proprietor. They had:
      1. Duncan STEWART, b/bap 7/16 MAR 1848 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. Jane STEWART, b/bap 13/21 JAN 1850 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland
      3. Thomas STEWART, b/bap 10/17 FEB 1853 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. Thomas is not found in census records and is presumed to have died young.
      4. Margaret STEWART, b 9 JUL 1856 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. m Malcolm McNaughton above, d14 JUN 1888 in St. Fillans, Comrie
      5. Peter STEWART, b 29 DEC 1858 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland

    2. Donald STEWART, b/bap 29/31 JAN 1800 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland
    3. Girsel STEWART, b/bap 28/29 APR 1803 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland
    4. Catharine STEWART, b/bap 14/16 SEP 1807 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland

I was certainly curious about your Stewart connection in St. Fillans as I mentioned my own Stewart ancestors came from St. Fillans. However, it would now appear that your Stewarts came previously from Blair Atholl which would eliminated them as potential relations to mine. My Stewarts were descended from the Stewarts of Ardvorlich to the west on Loch Earn. Unfortunately I don't have any information on the Stewarts in Blair Atholl to offer you any leads on that line.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely
Ryk

Ryk,
Many thanks for the information. It tallies with much of the information i have. I have been retracing my uncles work, a voyage of discovery if you like. The connection to a Donald McNaughton is one I have been trying to confirm but as the origional work was done by my uncle (Malcolm McNaughton) who has since passed away i am working on his old hand written notes. Rumer has it that when he discovered that an ancester was a theif or crook of some sort, he dropped the matter and has left gaps, perhaps to eliminate the "black sheep". I will find his notes and post what I have soon.

The Stewart connection on my tree is from Balir Atholl and I beleive that some still reside there. They are distant half cousins as my line came from Johanna's Marriage to Malcolm after Maggie Stewarts death.

Again many thanks,
Malcolm

Ryk,
The notes I have found are typed, I have scanned them into my PC but cannot copy and paste them here. The transcription is as follows:-

"The earliest positive identification of the line is with Donald and Margaret McNaughton at Killin in 1793. I was unable to find a death sertificate for Donald which would have identified his parents. Three Donald McNaughton were born in Killin in 1760's all had a father named John McNaughtan.

Birth- On 12-6-1793 a son MALCOLM MCNAUGHTAN wa born to Donald Margaret McNaughtan at Killin 361/2.

Marriage - On 17-07-1890 MALCOLM MCNAUGHTAN married MARGARET CAMPBELL at Weem 398/1"

The above transcription suggests that he has connected the birth of a Malcolm McNaughtan and the Malcom that married Margaret. I have also assumed that the reference 361/2 exists although I have as yet not confirmed it my self. The reference 398/1 exists and i have confirmed that and it is also confirmed by information that you and Davie have furnished.

I will see if i can dig up some more information.

Regards
Malcolm

And thanks once again for the smokies Malcolm, a much appreciated gesture, especially when I had Texans visiting.

Again, Boays
Here is an interesting site.
http://www.tartansauthority-shop.com/acatalog/Clans_Followers.html
The one of the MacNab and Donald MacNaughton is the most popular print and fridge magnet we do.
Donald died by drowning, in "Mysterious Circumstances" in Anderston in Glasgow 1868/69.
A direct line of the above

Not sure if you can fling some light on the John Stewart number 30 Ryk.
Out of all my contacts, I have only been able to place three of these prints to Kith N' Kin living today.

I don't see any reference to a "John Stewart #30" at the above link. I'd be happy to try to shed some light if you can help me find John. Smile

I think it's unfortunate when people shut down their research simply because they found someone who was involved in some sort of trouble. Frankly, I think those are some of the characters that make the research more interesting. But good on your for picking up where you uncle left off.

It sounds to me like your uncle found the death registration for the Malcolm who married Margaret Campbell. Presumably it gave his parents' names. I guess it's certainly possible that that Malcolm could have lived long enough for public registration of his death, but I find it very hard to believe that Malcolm could have been born in 1793 and married in 1809 at only 16 years of age. The norm in that era was for men to be in their late 20s to mid 30s when they married. I'm extremely doubtful of this entry. Even more so since it would violate onomastics. The entry I have suggested is a better chronological and onomastic match. However I don't have access to the Fortingall records to see if there's anything additional there to that might help confirm the connection.
